ECEA Enduro Series- Foggy Mountain Enduro: Blain, PA
Result: 1st Overall
This weekend the ECEA enduro series traveled to Blain, Pennsylvania to the Susquehanna Off-road Riders, Foggy Mountain Enduro. This race was formerly on the National circuit and is known for its rocky technical terrain. This year’s event turned out to be much different than I have ever seen as the club opted not to run the rock strewn mountain sides and kept the course in the faster less challenging woods.Dust was the biggest obstacle of the day as the lack of rain left the trail loose and powdery.
Foggy Mountain was also the debut of my new 300 Race model. With no chance to ride or do any testing on the bike prior to the race I sprung the forks and set out for a little race time testing session. My day didn’t start off the way I wanted. I chose to go with a trials tire on the rear and this proved to be a big mistake. The fast trail and the worn out bib mousse in my rear tire made things a little sketchy. Luckily I had a conventional tire mounted on another wheel and was able to get them switched after the first test. The second test went a little better for me but when it was over I found that all four of my front axle pinch bolts had decided to go missing. Luckily the axel decided that it was happy in my wheel and after scrambling some bolts form some people’s fanny packs I was off again. The rest of the day was a little less eventful which is the way I would rather it be.
When the score cards were posted I was thrilled to see that I marked the first race on the Race Model with a win. I can’t say enough good about the new Marzocchi 48mm forks that come on the Race. The stock valving is extremely good and well suited for enduro racing. They worked well on everything from rocks and roots to big high speed g-outs.

Q-Two consecutive podiums in the world’s mostpopular Enduro extreme… not bad! Congratulations!
A-Yes I’m really pleased with the result, the Erzberg Rodeo itself is massive with over 40,000 spectators and1800 riders! The whole event is great from the prologueto the Hare Scramble.
Q-You came into the race with some discomfort in your right ankle and without being able to ride in an
enduro for months… but wanted to participateanyway, right? Why it’s so important the Erzberg
Rodeo?
A-Its been a difficult season and the first time that I have missed World Trials Championship races due to injury since the start of my career in 1993. I have also been very busy with the trials bike with events and shows. Erzberg is a real challenge and I wanted to start it and see if the ankle would hold on. I had a stronger boot from Alpinestars and a large amount of tape to keep the ankle solid and went for it.
Q-You believe that without the ankle problem would have been able to win this year?
A-I have only been on the Enduro bike two times since Hell’s Gate extreme Enduro at the start of February so the preparation could not have been worse, to win this event needs a lot more time on the bike. I want to push for the win next year…
Q-What’s the secret to win at the Iron Giant?
A-Massive preparation, a lot of bike time and luck not to damage the bike in all the crashes.
Q-What was the hardest moment in the race?
A-Coming into the no help zone there are some really tough places, one zone was on 10 metres long and took me 10 minutes to push the bike through it…
INTERVIEW with DOUGIE LAMPKIN
29 June 2011
-How you’ve seen the edition of this year and what
most would you highlight? The atmosphere, the
track, the competitors?
-This year the weather was not good with a lot of rain
during the days before, but the public still came to
support. The start is in the bottom of the quarry with 500
riders ready to start and the atmosphere is amazing
waiting for the start.
Q-This is the first time that you participate at Erzberg with your new Gas Gas, what do you think?
A-The bike was fantastic from start to finish over in all the different terrain of the race and I was great feeling from the bike, especially with the engine power and traction. That made my race much more easy.
Q-From now on, what’s your plan for the remainder of the season?
A-I need to let the ankle heal properly, when I ride the Trials bike I feel the ankle has not support and the shock through riding sections give me just too much pain. I need to make a decision on riding in Italy very soon as my body says no, but my head always wants to ride.
Upton, Wyoming was the location for the sixth round of the national enduro series. My dad and I traveled up the week prior to the race to stay with Jack Morrison near Cheyenne Crossing, South Dakota. Steve Leivan and his dad were also there so we got in some nice mountain bike rides and motorcycle rides before the event.
This was my third time at the Inyan Kara and I look forward to this race every year. The dirt is very similar to what I have at home and that part of the country offers some great scenery and trail. I tested my bike at the site on Saturday and made a few adjustments to the jetting and gearing to make the bike feel stronger in the higher altitude.
The first test was a short five-mile test that was full of fast corners and a few tight sections. I got off to a good start and was able to get through the section clean. I was very pleased to hear that I had the fifth fastest time through that section to start the day off.
The second section was nine miles of similar terrain and again felt strong through the test. Towards the end of the section, the vision in my right eye started to do some really strange things. I kept seeing streaks of light in my eye but managed to get through the test without hitting the ground.
My eye kept giving me issues for the next two sections and I tried to get some Advil in me to help with the headache. Luckily, during the tests, I was focusing so hard that I didn’t notice the headache.
The remainder of the tests went pretty well. I took a small digger in the fifth test but was really pleased to see that the club had done a good bit of trail work to remove most of the face slapping trees.
The sixth and final test is always my favorite. The club runs us in and out of this rocky ravine and despite having cramps and being fatigued I had a good go and had a blast racing my way through the final section.
I finished the day in eighth, a result that I was okay with considering the things I had happen with my vision. My opening test was great and I showed some good speed in it. My Gas Gas XC 250 worked great all day and I am looking forward to the next round in Michigan.

ECEA Enduro Series- Shotgun Enduro: Grier City, PA
Result: 1st Overall
This weekend I traveled to the small, central PA town of Grier City for the running of the High Mountain Enduro Riders Shotgun Enduro. Over the past few years this has grown to be one of the highlights of my season and this year proved no different. The race has a great mix of flowing single track and technical rock sections. Aside from the great course the club’s antique shotgun trophy is one of the coolest and most coveted awards in the ECEA. It is also one of the only races all year that has an A/AA only section to punish the top guys at the end of the day. Once the race got going I was surprised how wet the first section actually was. This left me questioning my decision to use a rear trials tire but after the first section we went up into the hills and for the most part the course dried out. As the day rolled on I was making very few mistakes and my 300 was working awesome. With most of the race run at an 18 mph average it kept scores low for most of the event. When we got to the start control at the final 4.5 mile A/AA section I knew that I had at least a one point lead and needed to keep my head down ride smart to make it to the finish. The section was difficult enough that I lost almost twice as many points in one section as I did the rest of the day. When the score cards were tallied I took the win by 2 points putting the only Gas Gas in a field of roughly 250 bikes on top of the box.

Riders and teams from around the country gathered in Maplesville Alabama for the 10th annual running of the Gas Gas Offroad Perry Mountain 24 Hour Challenge.
In their first ever attempt at the hot and grueling 24 hour race, the newly formed six man Gas Gas Offroad racing squad fought hard, overcoming an unexpected mid race set back to claim 3rd place overall behind the winning team of FMF KTM lead by motocross-offroad legend Mike Brown, and eventual runner up Quality Time KTM featuring MX hero John Dowd.
The action started quickly for the Gas Gas team as 6 time Texas Enduro Circuit champion Haydn Franklin roosted off the start laying down solid lap times on the 10 mile dusty open course settling into 4th place behind the two KTM teams, and Action Kawasaki.
The second rider in the Gasser line-up, another Texas native and National Enduro contender Cole Kirkpatrick immediately turned in impressive laps and was able to move the team into podium position as the Quality Time KTM team ran into problems early.
For the next 6 hours the impressive FMF KTM team steadily increased their lead while the talented Gas Gas squad put in consistent laps to stretch their lead over 3rd place by over 13:00 minutes. As dusk fell all appeared to be going as planned, when the Gas Gas XC 300 Race model lost a top shock bolt forcing rider Stephen Edmondson to be towed back into the pits.
It was an impressive pit stop for the Gas Gas team. Crew members Richard Kirkpatrick, Neil Tucker, Taras Massey and Chuck Ware put Edmondson back on course in just 13 minutes but the time lost still dropped the team outside of the top 5 overall.
As night fell and the lights came out the team kept pushing. A strategic and risky change in the rider line-up by crew chief Ben Weathers was designed for a late night charge which left former SERA Champion Carsten Cagle, Haydn Franklin, Jeff Melik and Sorcs Champion Ben Hobbs to pull the load throughout the grueling night shift so Edmondson and Kirkpatrick could push to the checkers after sunrise.
The strategy paid off largely in part to Cagle, Franklin and Melik gutting out tremendous night shift rides which helped set up Ben Hobbs to make the pass on the Action Kawasaki team for 3rd place at day break in an off camber section of the course.
After making the pass for podium position Hobbs handed the bike off to a rested Cole Kirkpatrick who was able to extend the gap over the 4th place team before he handed off to the teams finisher, Stephen Edmondson. As he did the whole event, Edmondson would put in a solid ride to secure a podium finish by a comfortable margin.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the riders, the pit crew, and the bike” said Gas Gas National Sales Manager Clay Stuckey “These guys fought all night and never gave up”
